Project Heartbeat- Public Access Defibrillator Program

Began in 2005, Project Heartbeat is a community effort led by Southwest Ambulance to save lives through the strategic deployment and education of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The goal is to make AEDs as accessible as fire extinguishers throughout the Valley, allowing community and corporate neighbors to help each other while the ambulance is on the way.

AEDs feature clear voice directions allowing any passerby to operate the device with minimal or no prior training of the device. The device automatically analyzes a victim’s condition and if necessary, delivers an electrical shock to the heart to reverse sudden cardiac arrest.

“One More Lifesaver” Challenge

As part of Project Heartbeat, Southwest Ambulance is issuing the “One More Lifesaver” challenge to Maricopa County businesses and organizations. If a company or organization purchases AEDs through Project Heartbeat for their business and buys at least one extra AED to be donated to the community, Southwest Ambulance will donate an additional AED to the community.

The donated AEDs will be distributed through Project Heartbeat to public venues such as schools, libraries, community centers, non-profits, and other locations throughout the Valley.
Save Hearts in Arizona Registry & Education

Project Heartbeat will also assist in reporting the AED placements to the “Save Hearts in Arizona Registry and Education” ( S.H.A.R.E.) community AED registry organized by the Arizona Department of Health Services’ Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.

Southwest Ambulance is thankful that companies throughout the Valley are recognizing the importance of having AEDs at their locations and adding public access to AEDs around the community. An investment that will save lives.
